Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO)

Optico-Spinal MS (OSMS) - predominates in East (Japan). Some scientists believe it is the same as NMO in the Western world.

Description

NMO is an inflammatory disease of the nervous system, which usually affects only the optic (eyes) nerve and the spinal cord. It can cause a decrease in vision and varying degrees of weakness or paralysis in the legs and arms.

The Walton Centre is funded by the National Commissioning Group and Department of Health as a national referral centre for NMO as a diagnostic and advisory service.
